A curved, or pigtail, catheter is inserted through the arterial access line into the aorta and then the left ventricle. &nbsp;Contrast is introduced into the left ventricle and the pumping function of the ventricle can be observed. &nbsp; The structure and function of the aorta and mitral valve may also be observed during this procedure. &nbsp;Unless you and your students are already accustomed to looking at ventriculograms, they may seem confusing, but they offer a priceless look at the working left ventricle. &nbsp;I am including here a labelled still photo of an LV gram, catching the LV in diastole. &nbsp; It is seen from the side, with the anterior wall above, and the inferior wall below. &nbsp; The muscle walls don't stand out on the xray, but in the moving version, their action can clearly be seen as the cavity of the LV squeezes. &nbsp;Watch our YouTube channel for ventriculograms illustrating poor ejection fraction, alcoholic myopathy, mitral regurgitation, and many other interesting things!</p><p>We currently have posted a great case study showing the effects of delay to treatment of M.I. &nbsp; If you show your students a normal ventriculogram, then this one showing akinesis of the inferior wall, they will clearly understand the stunning effects of M.I. on the heart muscle. &nbsp;Remind them that these effects are sometimes temporary, but can be permanent!</p><p>We put a larger version of this illustration on our "Resources" page.</p></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-rate-this-content field-type-fivestar field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Rate this content:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><form class="fivestar-widget" action="/taxonomy/term/304/feed" method="post" id="fivestar-custom-widget--2" accept-charset="UTF-8"><div><div class="clearfix fivestar-average-text fivestar-average-stars fivestar-form-item fivestar-hearts"><div class="form-item form-type-fivestar form-item-vote"> <div class="form-item form-type-select form-item-vote"> <select id="edit-vote--4" name="vote" class="form-select"><option value="-">Select rating</option><option value="20">Give Using Ventriculograms to Enhance Your ECG Classes 1/5</option><option value="40">Give Using Ventriculograms to Enhance Your ECG Classes 2/5</option><option value="60">Give Using Ventriculograms to Enhance Your ECG Classes 3/5</option><option value="80" selected="selected">Give Using Ventriculograms to Enhance Your ECG Classes 4/5</option><option value="100">Give Using Ventriculograms to Enhance Your ECG Classes 5/5</option></select> <div class="description"><div class="fivestar-summary fivestar-summary-average-count"><span class="average-rating">Average: <span >3.5</span></span> <span class="total-votes">(<span >2</span> votes)</span></div></div> </div> </div> </div><input class="fivestar-submit form-submit" type="submit" id="edit-fivestar-submit--2" name="op" value="Rate" /><input type="hidden" name="form_build_id" value="form-P6KhcEtZPIsFcrDG44H-ehRNpHJ-jTri7ZO4Sspbj8Q" /> <input type="hidden" name="form_id" value="fivestar_custom_widget" /> </div></form></div></div></div><ul class="links inline"><li class="addtoany first last"><span><span class="a2a_kit a2a_target addtoany_list" id="da2a_3"> <a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share_save" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ecgguru.com%2Fblog%2Fusing-ventriculograms-enhance-your-ecg-classes&amp;title=Using%20Ventriculograms%20to%20Enhance%20Your%20ECG%20Classes"><img src="/sites/all/modules/addtoany/images/share_save_256_24.png" width="256" height="24" alt="Share"/></a> </span> </span></li> </ul> Mon, 18 Mar 2013 20:10:52 +0000 Dawn 418 at https://www.ecgguru.com https://www.ecgguru.com/blog/using-ventriculograms-enhance-your-ecg-classes#comments Inferior Wall M.I. In the emergency department, she had blood&nbsp;drawn, an I.V. started, and an aerosol treatment of albuterol.&nbsp; She was then taken to the radiology dept. for a chest xray.&nbsp; When she returned, a 12-lead ECG was done.&nbsp; 45 minutes had passed since she first arrived at the hospital.&nbsp; This ECG is shown here.&nbsp; It shows ST elevation in the inferior leads:&nbsp; II, III, and aVF.&nbsp; The patient was taken immediately to the cath lab, where her right coronary artery was found to have a 100% occlusion. (See image accompanying this ECG).&nbsp; Angioplasty was successful, and stents were placed in the artery.&nbsp; The patient was found to have anemia, with a hemoglobin of 5.5, and she was given a blood transfusion.&nbsp; During the cath procedure, a ventriculogram was performed, which showed a stunned and akinetic inferior wall.&nbsp; Unfortunately, subsequent ventriculogram performed several weeks later showed the lack of motion of the inferior wall to be permanent.&nbsp; The ventriculogram is also posted here, and at this <a title="YouTube Stunned Inf Wall" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7m-nVFTgSs">YouTube</a> link,&nbsp;so you will be able to show your students the mechanical effects on the heart of a delay to treatment in acute STEMI.&nbsp; See our <a title="You Tube" href="http://www.youtube.com/ECGGuru">YouTube</a> site for more ventriculograms and cath videos.</p></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-rate-this-content field-type-fivestar field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Rate this content:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><form class="fivestar-widget" action="/taxonomy/term/304/feed" method="post" id="fivestar-custom-widget--3" accept-charset="UTF-8"><div><div class="clearfix fivestar-average-text fivestar-average-stars fivestar-form-item fivestar-hearts"><div class="form-item form-type-fivestar form-item-vote"> <div class="form-item form-type-select form-item-vote"> <select id="edit-vote--6" name="vote" class="form-select"><option value="-">Select rating</option><option value="20">Give Inferior Wall M.I.
